Ruby fussed a little longer in the early morning hours puttering around her small apartment kitchenette. Finishing off the last of her first pot of coffee she rinsed her favorite blue mug and placed it on a mat by the sink to dry.
One last trip to the powder room reassured her, that even at 5 am not a single hair of her salt and pepper do was out of place. She took a small bit of lip polish and rubbed it over her lips to keep them soft and tucked it into her pants pocket. It was time to get down to business and start on today's goods.
Yesterday a new shipment of flour and fruit had come in and she was anxious to get started before anything spoiled. Her lips smiled at the thought of seeing a dear old friend whom made the delivery and she would set him aside something special as she always did.
Not one to waste any time she was soon in the kitchen of the bakery with several batches of goodies measured out and ready to be mixed together. After a few short hours the smells coming from the bakery hinted at fresh Banana breads and muffins, Spice cakes, Cinnamon rolls.. she opened the door wide, greeting the sun and the first trickle of customers whom were regulars.
"Morning LouEllen."
"Ruby is that Cinnamon I'm smelling?" asked LouEllen, she had been first in line that morning poking out Charlie with a sharp jab to his ribs. She was mighty partial to Ruby's Cinnamon Rolls.
With a low chuckle Ruby could only nod as she plated up a roll drizzled with sugar glaze and a mug of tea for her best customer. Things surly had changed in the years she'd been running the bakery but LouEllen since she walked in with her Momma had always been partial to Cinnamon Rolls.
"No fooling you LouEllen. Have a good morning and thank you." She added taking the credits for the goods that had changed hands. It was going to be one of those good days, Ruby thought as she helped the next few people in line. A good day indeed.
A steady stream of them came in for a fresh cup of coffee or tea, a little something for breakfast or to take home for later. Just before lunch there was a bit of a lull and she made her way back into the kitchen to start a few more things going in the ovens. The heat of the kitchen was a comfort as she moved back and forth in a rhythm, that was all her own. She kept an eye on the front of the store from time to time in case anyone else managed to stop in while she was baking up the next few batches.

It was a nice day, the sun was shining ...and Kiyoshi was hating every minute of it. He had been up all night working the clubs but it had been a poor night for business so he hadn't made much in the way of credit and that had left him tired and grumpy. He should be in bed and sound asleep right now, instead he was walking around in broad daylight because some idiot had caused a scene outside his apartment and he didn't want to be home when the VSF arrived and started asking for witnesses. Damned Humans! Even the ever present threat of the vampires seemed to cause him less trouble than the humans did. No vamp had never tried to beat him up, or rob him, or even insult him.
Kiyoshi wasn't quite sure when he had stopped counting himself amongst the human population of New Vegas. It had probably been when his grandmother had died. She had been his only real human contact for most of his life, the only one he had ever seen as a person rather than one of the dangerous masses who could expose him to the vampires. Well other than Ruby of course. But Ruby was different, she was like a second grandmother to him in many ways, and he didn't really think of her as a Human, she was just ...Ruby. It was almost lunchtime he realised and the bakery would be fairly quiet right now. He couldn't go home yet so maybe he could sit with Ruby for a while, out of the damned sun.
He walked briskly along the street, his head down and the hood of his sweatshirt pulled up to partially conceal his face and shield his eyes. Kiyoshi wore a bandanna around his head that he pulled down over his eyes like a blindfold when he was not being watched. The fabric was thin enough to see through but cut down a lot on the discomfort the bright light caused him. He had a pair of dark glasses that he wore around the clubs, but they had been expensive and would make him stand out far too much in the burrow. He hated being out in daylight and was relieved when he finally arrived at the bakery. The smell of fresh spiced bread was heavenly and his stomach rumbled in anticipation.
Kiyoshi stepped inside, glad to see the store quiet so he could relax a little. “Konnichiwa Ruby” he called out toward the bakery kitchen.

After setting a second sheet pan of Cinnamon rolls in the display case, Ruby looked up to see Ito come in and she gave him a warm welcoming smile and nodded. "Ogenki desu ka? Ito San." She replied. He'd come in often enough that she'd picked up a little of his language to make some polite small talk.
"I've some warm spice cakes if you'd like and some water on for tea." she offered and waited for him to make his choice. It'd been a while since he'd come into the bakery and she wondered what he'd been up to. Knowing that he preferred the dark but was out during the day had her curious as to what was up with the young man. Though as she pondered it a moment it was likely that he was by far older then she, but still looked to be a young man regardless of his true age.

Kiyoshi beamed happily at the old ladies greeting, it was one of the best things about Ruby's little bakery, everything was so polite and well ordered, it reminded him so very much of his grandmother and her very neat and quiet ways. Though Ruby was not as reservedd as his grandmother had been, which he did not find a flaw, she had the same strong and generous heart and he made a small respectful bow of his head to her. “Genki desu. Anatawa?” He knew that he had about reached the limit of Ruby's Japanese, but it was the way she made the effort at such homely niceties that endeared her to the hearts of so many.
He selected one of her spicier cakes, Kiyoshi was fond of the strong flavours and light dusting of pepper Ruby used, “...and a green tea please.” he added. While Ruby saw to his order he fished in the pouch of the money-belt he wore beneath his sweatshirt and carefully removed a couple of casino chips that he had scrupulously cleaned to ensure he left no traces of himself on them. It was one good reason that he dealt in chips rather than council credit whenever he could, chips were so much easier to clean if he was forced to handle them. He handed over the chips and accepted the cake and tea with a polite “Arigato.” He never accepted change from Ruby, he knew she would see it found its way to those who needed it more than he.
Taking a seat at one of the little tables near the counter he carefully peeled off one of his gloves so he could handle and eat the spice cake. After a polite pause he began to speak again to Ruby. “It might be of interest to some...” he began quietly “...to know our noble law enforcement officers are hard at work today.” Kiyoshi was always very careful about what he said in public, and especially so around Ruby. It would not do at all for a respectable businesswoman such as she to be seen or heard listening to rebel or dissident chatter. He took a soothing sip of his tea and continued. “They are canvassingg quite thoroughly for witnesses to an incident on 2nd street.” The road was a popular route into uptown, a part of why Kiyoshi particularly liked that he lived there, but no mutant wanted to be questioned by a zealous and ill tempered vampire forced to wake up during the day. Ruby could perhaps warn her boarders to stay clear until things returned to normal.

Ruby returned Kiyoshi's smile and returned his gesture. "I'm fine as always. Green tea coming right up then dear." She added and moved to the counter where the kettle sat on a hot plate. She busied herself for a few moments with getting a mug and the canister that held the green tea. Ruby never had the tea in bags like back in the day.. now it was treasured leaves dried and carefully preserved. Her supply was limited but she always managed to get more when she needed to. One way or another it found it's way to her bakery. Using the little stainer contraption that had been made for her she set the right amount of leaves in and placed it in the cup before pouring the water over it. Ruby set the little tea timer for 3 and half minutes for a perfect cup.
"Your most welcome." She told him and removed the chips from the counter where he'd lain them. They went into the pocket of her apron and clicked softly as they settled to the bottom with a few other chips. Business had been quiet well that morning. The timer went off and she removed the tea strainer from the cup. She brought it over to him from around the counter and sat with him a moment to rest her old bones.
His quiet tone had her full attention and she nodded with slightly pursed lips. The VSF had been more mobile as of late and it was worrisome to her. Something or someone was stirring up an hornets nest of trouble to have them so active. She fussed with the hem of her apron idly. "It is a frivolous matter to be sure." She told him with a slow nod to let him know though her words said other wise she would alert those whom needed alerting.
Lizzy was still out and about and had not yet returned. Ruby wondered what that girl was up to. Her and her brother had been the longest staying of her residence and she'd become quiet fond of the pair. Her eyes lifted to the ceiling as she let her thoughts distract her for a few moments. When one was the oldest living human, distractions were inevitable. With a tsk at herself she got up slowly and shook off such thinking. "You enjoy your treat now and don't be such a stranger young man." She added with a purely maternal stare. Ruby worried over all those that she came in contact with. An while the Vampires didn't bother with her there would come a day when perhaps they would.
Best not think of that now Ruby, she mentally scolded herself and went back around the counter. Her hand slipped the chips from her apron and into a slot underneath where they would be safe for now. Chips were a dear thing and since she got away without paying blood taxes they were her favored type of income. Her mind kept wandering back to what she'd been told and her worry nagged at her. What could have happened on second street that had them in a uproar. She'd have to put a few feelers out and see if she could land anymore information.

Gavin never thought that a street sign could be moved when he travelled the same route he travelled on this day of each week. He never even knew this part of the street was being rerouted to the new section of town, Little Britain. He was usually aware of these things...He felt the thin metal sign smack him in the head, the edge of it carving a goove in the upper right portion of his forehead as he blurred past the offending object. It was a minor flesh wound so he wasn't too worried about it, but head cuts bled like a siv.
He knew he should probably get off the street before a vampire smelled him, even if he was moving to fast to be seen. He was on his way somewhere special anyway. His knapsack was full of supplies for someone very dear to his heart. No time to stop anyway.
It only took him another 20 seconds to make the remaining distance of what would have been a 3-4 hour jog for a normal human, but Gavin wasn't normal. He was the fastest recorded speeder on the mutant rolls. That is why his trip only took him seconds, he was running at his own speed.
Gavin approached the back door to the old house that had been the closest thing to a home he ever had. It was the home of the closest thing he had to a granparent. It was the home of the woman everyone called "Gran." Gavin lifted the mat and stared down at the bare concrete underneath. He carefully looked to make sure no one was looking and lifted what looked like a stone that was set into the walkway square. This key had been kept there for as long as he could remember.
Very quietly, Gavin unlocked the back door then replaced the key, stone and mat before entering. He slipped the backpack off his back as he pulled the door closed and locked it again. "Gran," he called out as he wiped blood from his eyelid and blinked. He put the backpack on the counter and began taking items out of it.
"Gran it's me. I have some stuff for you." he called out. "Cinnamon, sesame seeds, that brown sugar stuff you were talking about, molassas, cloves..." he took a box out and looked at it and sniffed it, "Some kind of tea, Chai?" he wiped at his forhead again then pulled out a small black box and opened it, he began stacking poker chips on the counter, "Do you have a bandage?" he added, realizing the bleeding wasn't stopping.

After serving a few more patrons that wandered in the door she settled into her usual routine of cleaning and organizing what stock she had left. The large coffee canister had become low and the brew becoming bitter as it sat. With a dissatisfied twitch of her nose, she set about refilling the machine and carried it back into the kitchen. She heard Gavin, as she headed in that direction and a smile bloomed upon her face.
He always managed to come when stores were getting low. "Ah my boy, you always arrive.. " Her voice trailed off and hurried to him the sight and faint metallic tang of blood filled her kitchen. "What happen? Who did this to you?Are the children alright?" She questioned him almost in rapid fire as she ushered him onto the only stool. Her motions gave him no room to protest and she gave him the 'look' should he try otherwise. Ruby's weathered hands were gentle and soft as they examined his cut and she tsked softly under her breath. It wasn't to bad, though as with any head wound it bleed like a busted dam. "Nasty little bit of a slice, we'll get you patched up in no time." She assured him with a gentle pat on the arm and moved to gather up what she needed. A little green metal box was stored near the deep sinks, a faded and chipped red cross was on the top and sides. It had been an old army relic that managed to survive just as she did. Aged but still in tack useful and serving a purpose.
Flipping the latches, Ruby pulled out sterile strips of bandage as well as a small bottle of antiseptic. She turned back to him and brought everything with her. "Now you sit still, Ya' hear. This is gonna smart some. I'll be quick and gentle." Her voice was gentle and soothing like warm honey, but giving him again little room to protest. He was her favorite, like a son she'd never had. Ruby worried over all that came to her but Gavin she worried most about at times. He was more alone then anyone man needed to be.
With a practiced hand she daubed some antiseptic onto a bit of cloth and gently cleaned the wound. It was not as deep as she first suspected and shouldn't require any stitches which was good. She soothed his hair back from his forehead as she worked on him making soft mothering sounds. Once it was clean enough for her liking she bandaged it gently. Her hand came up and cupped his cheek, as her eyes searched his face for any signs of other injury. "You really aught to take more care my whirlwind." Ruby let him go and started cleaning up. It wouldn't do to smother him to much, he was after all a man grown but she cared. He always came through for others like him and for her. Without him things would be much different. She fussed at herself for letting the dreary thoughts invade at a time when she should be happy he was here.
Her eyes feel to the supplies that were spilling out of his knap sack. She smiled with a shake of her head. If those cagy Vamps ever figured things out, there would be a world of trouble at her door. "My boy you never cease to amaze me. What would I ever do.." Ruby stopped unable to say anything further as emotion chocked off her words. Age was creeping up on her lately and she couldn't stop it. Holding back her tears that she knew would upset him, she would never use them against him as she suspected had been done at one time.
Ruby fussed with her apron and squared her shoulders as she started to put the things he'd brought her into other places. "Is everything else going alright?" she asked hoping that it would distract him from slight lapse of emotion.

It was pleasantly relaxing for Kiyoshi to sit and chat a little with Ruby. Her responses to his small snippet of news made it quite clear to him that she had fully understood the implications of what he had said and that others would soon know. Ruby was a very good source of local information, as one could well expect from an old lady, but she was also one of the few a mutant could trust. He could tell just from the way she became distracted that she was already thinking of which of her 'Grandchildren' to warn first.
A few more customers began to trickle into the shop and Kiyoshi simply sat quietly and drank his tea as Ruby busied herself meeting, greeting and serving her loyal patrons. He heard someone moving around back in the kitchen as Ruby headed back there to refill her coffee cannister, and he wondered for a moment if Ruby had hired extra help here since he was last by. He did not make a habit of frequenting the little shop during daylight though so perhaps she had done so some time ago.
He had now finished his spice-bread and he began to clear the table. It had always been his custom when he visited the shop to clear away the crockery he used and see that it was taken to the kitchen and thoroughly rinsed before it joined the other dishes to be washed. He had never explained to Ruby exactly why he did this and she had never pressed him on it, simply accepting that it was 'his way'. That simple acceptance was just one of the many things that made her such a perfect Grandmother to all her charges.
Her sharp exclamations however had him halfway to his feet before he even realised what he was doing. He couldn't hear her words but the tone was frightened. He glanced briefly around the otherwise empty shop then picking up his empty cup and plate he moved quickly and quietly back toward the kitchen door. If someone was trying to hurt Ruby... well they were going to get a lesson they would not soon forget. However as he stepped into the doorway what he saw was nothing so awful as he had imagined.
Kiyoshi simply stood there watching them as Ruby fussed over the injured man. He did not recall ever having seen the man before but clearly Ruby knew him well and was doing a fine job of patching him up. He felt suddenly a little awkward stood there when Ruby was so clearly preoccupied that she had not even realised he was present. Interrupting however would be rude and so he simply slipped silently into the kitchen and began to rinse his dishes, waiting patiently for Ruby to finish up treating her guest.

Gavin allowed himself to be ushered to a stool, he liked the attention Gran always showered over him. It was almost like she really was his grandmother, even if he never knew his family. He reached to the counter next to him and grabbed a cookie as she worked on his head. "No one did it, unless you count that blasted construction crew. They moved a sign on 2nd street. I ran smack into it. I think I got blood all over the thing, probably dented it too. Good thing no one saw me." He was used to having cuts treated. In his job, he was injured often, saving people, running from people to avoid detection, getting into fights because of who he was, it was just an every day thing.
"The children are fine. They asked me to bring them a cookie, if you have a couple to spare." he stopped eating his cookie and looked at it, "Damn...I should have taken this home." he said then sighed, "Maybe you have a couple more to spare?" He asked and flashed his signature grin for her. He smiled at her when she looked at him, he couldn't help it, her eyes always had a smile in them and he could not help but smile back.
Gavin watched Gran sort through his meager gifts that could never be enough to repay her for the kindnesses she had shown him in the past and found himself dropping his eyes. He couldn't stand tears, even if they were unshed and happy ones. It broke his heart.
He was about to answer her question when he saw the Asian boy standing there. He examined him form his stool, noting the gloves on his hands, the shades in his pocket, his palor and disposition, "Who's the biochem?" he asked knowingly. "Another refugee in need of sanctuary? I think we have a couple rooms open." he asked as if it was a normal everyday conversation...because it was. "OH! Wait...I found this on the dash of the truck I found that cinnamon in. The thing is full of spices but its in the heart of Salt Lake City...I will take me some time to get back to it. I hope those zombies never figure out how many humans are down here." he reached in his pocket and pulled out a little white angel that was cracked at the base where he chiselled it off the dash with a knife. He handed it to her and kissed her on the cheek, "A plastic angel for a real angel." he said then grinned. Again he turned on a dime and faced the boy. He thrust out his hand, "Gavin McMahon." he announced.

Kiyoshi was startled by the stranger's sudden address and rather shocked at his instant recognition of exactly what Kiyoshi was. He tried very hard to pass as a normal Burrow dweller, but it occurred to him that was much more difficult during the day, at night in the clubs he fit in just fine. He had heard that 'Biochem' was the classification that the MPS used for his kind of mutation but his Grandmother had not trusted them and so neither did he. Ruby however he did trust, and she was an infallible judge of character, so perhaps this was not someone he need be afraid of. Cautious yes, but no need for actual fear.
If someone like this man had confronted him on the street or in a club he would have received a very different reaction from Kiyoshi. His street persona was a carefully constructed façade to keep him from being hassled whilst he conducted his dubious business. This however was Ruby's 'house' and here he was always as mindful of his manners as much as if she were his own Grandmother. He had great affection and respect for the quite amazing old lady. The stranger was quite an imposing figure and Kiyoshi did not want to cause Ruby any trouble.
“I am not a refugee and I am in no need of assistance at this time.” Kiyoshi responded politely, though he was a little irked that the other seemed to think he was looking for charity. “I have all I need, but thank you for your concern.” He really wasn't sure quite what to make of the man but he had heard enough to gather that he was the reason he was not home in his own bed right now. That was hardly something he could hold against the man however, accidents happened, though this was starting to feel more like fate at work and that had Kiyoshi curious.
His curiosity had drawn him into some very interesting and sometimes dangerous situations before now but he was not dissuaded from it by such small inconveniences. His life was complicated and dangerous enough that briefly satisfying his near insatiable curiosity made to his mind very little difference all in all. If fate had placed him in this situation then he should at the very least find out what the situation was. He smiled softly and offered the man a small bow before he accepted the offered hand in his own gloved one. “Ito Kiyoshi. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
Looking back at Ruby, Kiyoshi was curious as to her reactions. He had never told her exactly what his mutation was but Gavin McMahon was a name that he was familiar with, he was big in the MPS and that explained his easy recognition of Kiyoshi's nature. It also had him a little anxious with regards to who else might notice with him being out and about at this uncharacteristic hour. Was fate prodding him to approach the MPS? He could see no advantage in it yet here he was. “I have heard of your work.” he offered cautiously, testing to see if the other was open to conversation.

Ruby listened to him and nodded in the appropriate places. She knew that Gavin was more then capable of taking care of himself. That did not stop her from her worry though. Never having children of her own left her heart wide open for the, caring she gave to others. She tisked over his explanation of his wound. "Silly of them to put it in your way." she teased.
Her head shook at him as he mumbled about the cookie. "There are always plenty of them for you and the children. I will put some in bag for you to take. Maybe some muffins too." He was looking a little worn around the edges to her. His grin warmed her heart and she could only chuckle. "Charmer."
She put most of the items up before pulling out a large container of fresh cookies. They would have been better with chocolate chips but those were not an easy thing to come by even for her whirlwind. Sometimes it was difficult being able to remember what had been and living with the now. So much the world had taken for granted.
His remark had her looking up, before focusing on Ito. "No, another good friend, like you young man, behave." she said to Gavin before turning her attention to Ito. Giving him a warm smile and hoping that he did not bolt for the door. Bold and to the point, her whirlwind never missed a beat.
Gavin pulled out a little figurine of an angel and gave it to her. She could only stare a moment at the little angel. It was precious. "Thank you." she managed quietly, as he kissed her cheek with a grin. If she did not get her self busy she was going to have a right good cry and embarrass them all. Herself mostly.
"I'll take these to be wrapped up and you boys can have a little chat. There is more cookies if you would like. Ito San, You can trust Gavin." She told them both and gestured to a second smaller container. She would wrap these cookies up at the front counter. Ruby left them in the cozy kitchen to get acquainted. If knowing that Ito was a biochem was a shock to her she never let it show. Each of those that came into her bakery had their own special gifts. She held no judgements over any one. It was not in her to do so. Everyone that lived now in New Vegas must do what they could to survive. Both young men had much to learn from each other she figured and gave them each one last smile before bustling about and heading back to the store front.
She was most certain that they would both find a way to work together. It was what Gavin did best being the head of the Mutant Protection group. Knowing Ito for half as long, he was a good lad. His grandmother had raised him up to be a fine respectable young man. Dispite what he may do to keep himself out of the hands of the vampires.
Ruby took care of a few customers that trickled in and wrapped up three dozen cookies for the children. It would tide them over till Gavin came back again she hoped. She made up a second smaller bag just for him though.

Gran was leaving him with the kid. He was uncomfortable around young people but he was left with them quite often. He was beginning to get used to it. He looked at Ito Kyoshi and tried to figure out what his body chemistry did. It was not corrosive because his clothing was in good repair. It was harmful to others or it effected them in a noticeable way, because he was covered anywhere someone might touch him. He might even be sensitive to sunlight, a lot of biochems were.
“So, tell me about your mutation.” He said in a low voice that could not be heard outside of the kitchen. “You can trust me, like Gran said. And you may think you are not in need of assistance but if you have any fears of the VSF finding you, I can hide you in plain site.” He added just to try and help the man feel at ease. “I run the MPS, and the leeches think I run it their way, but I have my own way of doing things.” He figured if Gran trusted him, he could trust him too. “If it helps if I tell you mine first, my mutation allows me to move, very, very fast.” It was often the case that mutants wanted to play ‘I’ll show you mind if you show me yours first.’

Kiyoshi was a little nervous when Ruby left him alone with the newcomer. Gavin was physically very imposing and Kiyoshi spent a lot of time avoiding getting cornered by physically dominant individuals. He knew how to use his mutation to his advantage to expedite a retreat but the resulting scene was not something he liked to have to instigate. He was sweating uncomfortably given that it was around noon and that always caused his mutation to amplify in effect.
He continued to smile softly as the man looked him up and down. Perhaps he had not identified Kiyoshi quite as thoroughly as he had originally feared. But given that Ruby seemed to want him to talk to Gavin, perhaps he should consider 'coming clean' so to speak. He would trust Ruby and to the fates that had orchestrated this meeting and see what would come of it.
“Biochem, that is what you would call me, yes?” His eyes met Gavin's directly, his widely dilated pupils quite obvious once he ceased the politely demure lowering of his gaze. “Grandmother always said I had been touched by Ama-no-Uzume.” His smile became a little sharper, revealing a hint of a less innocent, more savvy persona. “Do you know what that means?”
Slowly he pulled off one of his gloves. “I can bring you her joy and visions, intoxication and mirth...” Kiyoshi remained very still, he made no move at all to approach or touch Gavin, “...but all the Kami are two-souled. To be powerful, fearless, without pain or conscience, that too I can give you.” Kiyoshi was not sure why he was being difficult right now. Perhaps it was still the assumption he required charity that was chafing him. He did not require 'assistance', but he was lonely.,..
“Do you wish to try it for yourself? Can I help you?”

Gavin watched as the kid tried to come off as sinister. This was a defence mechanism that he saw quite often with mutants. He understood it because he had used his abilities in the past to intimidate as well. It makes people afraid of you. It makes you untouchable. For a biochem, he could see how this could be important, especially with this one since he could obviously either poison or drug him with a touch.
"Sure kid, go ahead and help me. I'll just let Gran know not to become alarmed when she sees me lying on the floor foaming at the mouth and to be sure to have Sam make sure the mutant orphans get something to eat tonight and to contact Amitiel and let her know I can't bring the medicine tonight, all because some kid wanted to act like a jackass." he said animatedly then took a bite of his cookie.
He pushed away from the counter, "But you'll have to catch me first." and disappeared into the other room where Gran was. "Gran, I'm not sure I like you having a guy like that hanging around here." he pointed at the door he came through.

Gavin gave her a fright and she yelped. "Lord have mercy, sneaking up on an old woman is bad for her ticker. Now what's this? A guy like that? Gavin McMahon." She shook her head and placed the now full to the brim bag of treats for the kids in his hands. Adding a second smaller one on top with his name neatly printed. She gave the bags a pat. "You take those to the children and this one is for you. No sharing. Your far to skinny. Maybe some meat on those bones will keep you from moving to fast." She teased gently, before getting down to the meat of the issue.
"Boy, I've known Ito San, for several years now and he's been nothing but respectful and kind. His own gran raised him for a time much like you've had me. He's just like the rest that come through this door. Welcome, until I say other wise." She told him in a no nonsense manner. With that said she bustled through the door way and back into her kitchen. Stopping near Ito and looking at him directly.
"You ain't getting off without a scolding as well. You've never done anything that would cause me worry, I appreciate that your who you are. Even if I do not have the all of it. But picking fights in my kitchen won't be tolerated. " She knew he would not permit a hug, but from where she stood he needed one. He had always been most careful to avoid contact and kept his plates so he alone could clean them. It clicked into place now for Ruby. He had protected not only her but other clients as well. It was a honorable thing he had done. She turned to Gavin and gave him the parental look as well. "That goes for you as well." She added with a firm nod.
"I would say you boys shake and make up, but a nod of agreement will work in this instance. You both have much to offer one another. It would please me to see you help one another. " She let that last sentence hang. Oh she was not without her own methods. One did not live a hundred years and not know when those words would get results.
