Justice ate in silence because he didn't have answers to Billie’s questions because, frankly, the answers made him feel like he was inadequate. But then he was. He looked like good man stock but he was just a tarnished lump of flesh who would likely blow himself up one day, like most demolitions experts. The only loss would be someone who was good at what he did. He would never be a husband, a father or anyone special. He would always just be the “blow things up guy.”
Damaged goods. How could this sweet and gentle woman, who would make the perfect wife to some healthy young man possibly damaged. He found it hard to believe that she could be damaged goods and if he found out someone turned her that way…well let’s just say it wouldn’t be pretty. He owed her his life, that meant she was under his protection until she found a worthy man.
She talked to fast and didn’t let him answer and before he knew it, she was feeling his head and taking his pulse. Then, just like that, with one last idle threat, she was gone. He shook his head and sighed. Maybe one day he would give her answers to her questions, but not tonight. He wasn't hungry any more. He picked up his tray and set it outside the door for the camp dogs to eat. Dogs were great things in a rebel camp; they usually sounded the alarm before anyone even saw, or smelled a zombie coming. He peeled off his shirt, kicked off his boots, put his hat on the side table and stretched out on the bed. He didn't even remember falling asleep.
What he did remember was waking up to the sound of someone screaming across the camp. He jerked upright. What that Billie? He stuffed his feet into his boots and grabbed his hat and two guns then bolted out the door, leaving his shirt behind. He ran towards the medic’s quarters when the dogs started barking and the alarms sounded. Suddenly gripped with the fear that zombies might be in the camp and after Billie he broke into a dead run. People ran in all directions, manning their posts.
He got to Billie’s quarters and burst inside. One quick look told him that there was no one in the place with her. One more quick look around told him she was fine. He pressed a gun into her hand, “Stay here.” He commanded, coughed violently and then was gone again.
Now he was winded but he continued to run until he got to the tall scaffolding inside the steel wall. He quickly climbed to the switch box that had several wires leading out of it. He opened the side and pulled out a crank which he began to turn hard and fast. He looked up to see how many zombies there were and swore under his breath. There must have been 50 of them. “Get those snipers up here!” he shouted. He was relieved when he heard the admiral barking orders and saw the general running across the compound toward the wall.
He turned and watched the zombies; they were right where he wanted them, “Gotcha.” He said with a grin and pressed the button on the box…nothing. “Fuck!” he growled and grabbed the crank and turned it hard again. Once again he pressed the button…nothing. Just then someone climbed up with a sniper rifle. He didn't have time to see who it was but he grabbed the gun and used the sight to follow the wires to the jump box. “FUCK!” he growled again when he saw one of the main wires had come dislodged.
He shoved the rifle back into the hands of the person he took it from and vaulted over the top of the wall. The wall was 15 feet high and he rolled when he hit the ground and broke into a run again, straight toward the zombies. The zombies saw him and headed in a beeline for him.
Justice saw them coming for him but he was sure he could get to the jump box before they got to him. He poured on the speed, even though he could barely breathe at this point and slid like a baseball player into home plate at his destination. He didn't even think. He grabbed the wire and touched it to the end of the fuse trigger and BOOM! The 15 meter stretch of ground under zombies feet exploded in all directions sending a cloud of dirt and sand into the air. Dirt rained down from the sky with zombie body parts and muck mixed in.
When the cloud of dust cleared, what looked like a mound of sand near the trigger box moved then stood up. It was Justice. He took off his hat and beat it against his leg and replaced it on his head. He then took a thin cigar out of his back pocket and a lighter out of the front. He stuck the thing between his teeth and lit it then slowly started walking back toward the wall cussing under his breath.

Billie was breathing hard, she had a crash through her door and Justice came running in. She screamed again, the memory of the ex-husband Justice hybrid form her dream still fresh in her mind. She stopped the scream, cutting it off mid way as Justice searched her little room then told her to stay there before running out.
It was then that she heard the shouts outside.
"Shit Zombies" she murmured as she got out of bed quickly chucking on clothes, but that didn't explain why Justice had rushed into her room.
Shaking her head unable to work it out she grabbed her medical bag and headed for the Wall, her designated medical station. She had not long put the bag down when she heard a scream, then another someone shouting that Justice was over the wall.
"Shit" she cursed and rushed to where she could see over the wall, she looked over in time to see Justice reach out and then the explosion.
Billie couldn't even scream, her hands flew to her face, she couldn't bare to see what had happened. She felt wetness on her cheeks and she was fighting not to sob. But then she heard a murmur and then another and then cheering. She looked up as the gates were opened and Justice strolled in as though he had just been out for a Sunday walk in the park.
People rushed to him, the Admiral was there patting him on the back as the gates were closed and the General was hugging him. People pushed to pat his back but Billie couldn't believe he would be so wreckless, especially after being so close to death the day before. Seeing red she stormed down towards where the crowd was gathered, she pushed through the crowd until she stood in front of him.
She waited until his eyes met hers and she lifted her arm, drew it back and slapped him across the face hard. She stared at him a moment longer and then stepped forward and threw her arms around his neck and hugged him.
"Are you crazy?" she murmured into his neck. "Of all the crazy, idiotic, stupid, selfish things you could do"
Just then she heard her boss standing behind her laughing. Remembering where she was, and that the entire compound was looking at her, her arms slid down and she backed away from him. She stared into his eyes for just a moment then turned and ran, the crowd parted for her as she ran all the way back to her room, forgetting her medical kit and forgetting that usually they had a debrief from the Admiral after such an event.
Kris watched with a smirk on her face, after Billie was out of sight she clapped Justice on the back "Seems you have upset the new medic Justice, you better run along and see if she needs some of your particular comfort."
She laughed and added "You can report on why the detonation failed the first time after lunch" she grinned and half shoved him in the direction of Billie's quarters.

Justice didn't like the limelight but at least he was useful. 50 zombies would have used up ammunition that was vital not only for the camps survival against smaller attacks but also for hunting for food since the cows had to be used for milk for the children. The herd beasts that had escaped from the zoo seemed to thrive in the Nevada wilderness and new how to stay out of reach of the zombies. He knew he saved at least 50 bullets this day. So why was Billie so angry, now...why was she hugging him? He didn't mean to worry her. He just meant to save the camp...
He spun around and glared at Kris. "It ain't like that.." he hissed, "Billie is a real lady..." he turned and glared at the head medic, "Unlike some people I know." he looked and saw the medical bag, "Aw hell..." he muttered and grabbed the thing up and gripped it tightly. He turned on the head medic again, "I won't be needing your services any longer." he growled so only she could hear him then stomped off toward Billie's quarters.
It never bothered him before that people thought that way about him. He rather enjoyed it. But now not. Not when it involved Billie. She didn't deserve the rumors. She didn't deserve to be thought of as one of his conquests.
Justice's long legs didn't take long to carry him across the compound. He stopped outside the door and stared at it for a moment. He lifted his hand and rubbed the back of his neck before taking the last step and rapping on the door frame. "Billie...Billie it's Justice...come on girl, let me in and tell me what's wrong." he called out. He didn't know what to do. He didn't know what to say so he turned his back on the door and contemplated leaving. He realized he had her medical bag. He turned around and placed it carefully in front of the door.

Billie sat on her bed wiping away the tears angrily, she didn't get up when she heard Justice knock the first time. She got up and reached for the door, as she heard something crash to the floor in front of it.
She flung the door open and looked at Justice's back.
"Sorry" she murmured "I thought you had blown yourself up." she reached out and touched his arm, grabbing his sleeve and tugging him around to face her.
"I didn't mean to slap you" she reached up and touched the red mark on his cheek "I had just been so frightened you were dead, and then I was so angry you weren't and had scared me that much and then I was just relieved you were alright"
She shook her head as though disbelieving she had reacted that way herself.
"But thank you for bringing my case" she smiled "Why don't you come inside and I can give you your antibiotics"
She tugged his sleeve again, dragging him towards the door and inside, she kicked the case inside out of the door way, her gaze locked in his as she dragged him towards the door. As he paused in the doorway she closed her eyes and wondered if she was going insane but she stood on tip toes and wrapped her arms around his neck once again, she looked up at him pushing him against the door frame.
She closed her eyes and pressed her lips to his, kissing him gently.
When she opened her eyes she stepped away quickly, blushing. She could feel her cheeks burning like a tomato. She picked up her case and placed it on the bed and keeping her back to Justice so that he couldn't see her blushing, rummaged around for the antibiotics.

Justice grinned at the thought of her thinking he blew himself up. “Darlin’, I’m the pyrotechnician here. It’s my job to blow things up.” He said as he followed her in. He could have said more but she was suddenly on her tips toes and pulling him down so she could kiss him. His mind screamed that it was wrong but his heart was louder in telling him it felt oh, so right. Nothing had ever felt so right.
He stood there stunned for a moment, unable to think. Then suddenly the thoughts flooded his mind; The thoughts that he was poor breeding stock, that if he had children, they could be born sick, that Billie deserved a man that could give her healthy children. But once again, his heart overruled his mind. The thought of her with another man made his chest tighten and he felt like the air was sucked out of the room. He knew he couldn’t let that happen. He pushed away from the wall and he took the two steps inside that allowed him to reach for her. He slid one arm around her waist and guided her body to where she was facing him as his other arm went around her. He lifted her off the ground enough to be able to kiss her again.
His kiss was gentle but filled with passion. He let his lips linger against hers for a moment before pulling them away and resting his forehead on hers, tipping his hand backward off his head, revealing long golden locks that softly curled lazily over his shoulders and down between his shoulder blades. “You deserve a man who can give you healthy children, Billie.” He murmured softly, “But my heart wants what it wants and I couldn’t bear to see you with another man.” His deep voice rumbled. “If you’ll have a damned fool likeme.”

Billie grabbed the antibiotics as she felt Justice's hand on her arm spinning her around to face him. She froze for an instant, in anticipation of being held and belted, a response that was now so instinctual she doubted she would ever stop. But Justice was pulling her up into his arms and his lips were pressed against hers. She kept her eyes closed a moment when he lifted his lips, holding onto the moment just a bit longer, trying to make sure she would remember every little detail.
She took a deep breath and opened her eyes, his words made her want to cry but she bit her lip, listening. He obviously didn't know just how broken she was and here he was telling her that he couldn't give her healthy children which wasn't true either when the truth of the matter was that he had more chance of giving her a healthy baby than she had ever conceiving one.
"Justice" she murmured stepping back from him and sitting on the bed, tapping the blankets for him to sit next to her. She held his hand in hers and squeezed it gently.
".....the majority of hereditary disorders involving anemia are genetic yes, but most are recessive. It means you need both parents to be carriers of the gene to pass it on, and then since I dont have any symptoms at best I could be a carrier, one normal gene and one sick gene. That makes at worst a 50/50 chance that any baby would have the illness and at best, they would be a carrier but not sick. I could take samples and take it to the hospital I worked at in the city, they could tell you exactly what you have and the chances of it being passed down"
She reached up, her arm around his shoulder, her fingers working through his blonde curls that were usually hidden by his hat. She took a deep breath trying to pluck up the courage to tell him about her. She leaned forward and rested her forehead against the point of his shoulder for a moment and when she lifted her head she was determined to tell him, he had to know.
"So you should know that the hospital has told me that I probably won't be able to have any children." she took a deep breath feeling tears sting her eyes. "I was pregnant once you see, and something happened and I lost the baby" she took a deep breath and looked into his "Someone beat me so badly that the doctor thinks that loosing the baby might have caused permanent damage"
A tear ran down her cheek but she wiped it away quickly "So you are the one that has a chance of having healthy children, and even affected, any child of yours can be easily treated and live a full healthy life" she looked down at the ground "So I have to ask, if it comes down to it are you prepared to face the elders over the fact that I am more than likely barren?"

Justice listened carefully to what she said. He was happy just having her touch him instead of acting like he was tainted goods. He didn't like what she was saying and it took all his self control to not stand up and demand to be told who the bastard was that laid his hands on her in such a way. He had to think about this and get the information out of her in a subtle way, either way; someone was going to die in a freak accident.
“You know, might and probably don’t work for me darlin’” he said then turned his head so he could look at her face. “I ain’t bringin’ no kids into this place if there is even a remote chance that it will be born like me. This has been hell, all my life. I ain’t puttin’ a kid through that.” He moved his hand so he could take hers and hold it. “And probably don’t mean you can’t have kids, if you probably can’t, there is a chance you can.” He sighed and looked down at his hand. “Maybe we’re peas in a pod. Maybe you’d be makin’ a mistake with me, if you could have kids, and I gave you one who was…bad stock, like me.”
He let go of her hand and put his arm around her. “Thing is, we both need to make it look like we are at least trying.” Then he sort of grinned. “Maybe you could…fix me so I can’t make any babies, then we could…have fun trying?” he blushed and looked at the floor. “That sounded wrong, I mean, I don’t just want to be with you for that…I mean, if you never wanted that, that would be fine…not that I don’t want to, I do…” he suddenly stood up, “Uhg! This ain’t comin’ out right!”
He began to pace, “What I mean is…I want whatever you want…wait, that ain’t right either…well it is but it…UHG!” He turned and dropped to his knees in front of her, placed his hands on her shoulders and kissed her soundly. He took his lips away and took a deep breath, “I want to be with you, any way I can.” It wasn’t exactly that he wanted to say but he was no good with words and it came pretty damn close.

Billie laughed, it started at a giggle that she tried to stifle but it ended up a full laugh. Tears came to her eyes as she laughed and she had to stifle into into a few hiccups before she could stop.
"Here we are, arguing over who is the most broken and the least likely to have children and we barely even know each other, talk about jumping the gun" she smiled at him "Unless of course you were planning to do something about living up to your reputation before breakfast?"
She held back the laughter that was threatening to set her off again. She grinned at Justice and managed just a slight giggle.
"You are an amazingly thoughtful man" she slid her hands to either side of his face, she pressed her lips against his for just a moment but lifted them quickly "Just do me a favour and don't almost blow yourself up when I can see." she took a deep breath "Because I thought my heart would stop beating with fear you had been hurt."
She pressed her lips against his, kissing him slowly, the intensity building slowly as her tongue sought his, dancing a slow dance. Her hands slid from his cheeks into his hair as the temp of the kiss changed, becoming deeper and harder, more passionate on the edge of being desperate.

Justice was about to argue that he hadn’t meant it to be a comparison as to who was more broken but instead, she made it easy on him and he didn't have to use words at all to tell her how he was feeling. He had always been a quiet man unless he was being a smartass to hide the pain of loneliness. Being a funny man gave him friends which he enjoyed having. But now, he didn't have to say a word. He knew exactly how he could tell her what he was feeling and if it was his being true to his reputation, so be it. Only he hoped he didn’t come off as being that kind of guy who gets his rocks off then waltzes away. That was the furthest from his mind.
He parted his lips the instant he felt her tongue touch his lips and intertwined his own around hers. He thought he could just kiss her all day and be the happiest man alive. That is until her kiss became more urgent. She wanted more and he was willing to give it to her. His arms slipped around her back and he held her close, kissing her deeply. It only served to make him want more as his arousal became apparent inside his tight demin trousers. He wanted this so badly but, he couldn't just take what he wanted without permission, he couldn't. He pulled is lips away from hers and rested his forehead against hers and took a deep breath. He could not help but to press his lips to hers twice more before finding his words. “Darlin’…if I don’t stop now, I don’t think I’ll be able to.” He murmured.
