Sam stood around the crackling fire, someone through another lump of rotted wood into the drum and the flames crackled and danced, the moisture in the wood popping with loud bangs. She really disliked the undercity at the best of times, but tonight it seemed even more full of cold hostility that had nothing to do with the temperature.
Not her idea of a super Saturday night but she had heard through the day that there had been a mutant hiding in this area who was need of their help. The mutant had had a run in with a VSF officer, had narrowly avoided being taken to the laboratory, a fate worse than death in her opinion, had he was now laying low.
However the information she had received from a well known source was that he was not only frightened and hungry but had been injured in his escape and needed urgent medical care. Not wanting to risk the hospitals, where VSF guards were bound to be patrolling, he was bound to have contacted the local healer who was also in this area, increasing the likely hood of the information being correct.
It was times like these she wished that she had the ability to sniff out people, she had met someone once that could and it was a highly useful ability, like being a tracking dog. But instead she had to do it the hard way, talk to the people, hang out and look non-threatening on the off chance someone mentions something or that the person she was looking for the help would make an appearance.
It was going to be a very cold night, as it most often was in this desert town and she could see her breath each time she exhaled. About ten people huddles around the metal drum, with no heating in their hovels they called home and it was the best way to keep warm until they went and huddled in their bed. She hoped that she could find him tonight so that she wouldn't have to spend another night down here, a night in the cold, her only weapons those that she could conceal.
She sensed movement behind her and resisted the urge to look. There was a soft inaudible crunch of gravel and she watched the others around the flame, none of them even tensed at the noise, oblivious to their surroundings beyond that of the warmth of the flame. Another breath noise and she moved her head just slightly, trying to orientate where it was coming from, which seemed like it was becoming from behind her.
She reached out her fingertips to the flame, warming them, trying to blend in with the others in the crowd. When she brought them back in they fell to her side and slid inside the sleeves of her tattered jacket. Within the sleeves she grasped the two small blades concealed there. Keeping them concealed, her shoulder slouched in a view of relaxation but ready to move at the slightest touch. She listened intently, certain that the person moving behind her was trying to do so with deliberate stealth.
As someone else joined the circle around the flame with a hearty laugh and greeting and everyone bustled and moved to make room she took the opportunity to take a few steps backwards, slightly back from the circle but not obviously so, and waited for the person behind her to make themselves known.

Nighttime. Not Gavin's favorite time to be out in the city. Especially in the UnderCity. The Undercity was what the locals called the place where the old city ruins still stood. The only creature comfort here was access to water and whatever stolen goods you could buy with stolen credits.
Gavin looked around at the dirty, sick and homeless people who were mostly mutants. It was sheer stubborness that had them living this way. He could help them. He could help the mutants blend in with society, get them jobs and homes. The humans, he would get into contact with the angels who helped everyone, mutant and human alike. The people that lived here were just plain stubborn. They refused to even pretend to be a cog in the vampire wheel. He sometimes wondered why the human inhabitants of the undercity didn't just go to Haven. It wasn't like a mutant had that option.
The reason Gavin was out there on this night was in search of a mutant that had been spotted by the VSF, sneaking into the city. He had been stopped and asked for a blood sample. That is when he ran. From what he understood, the man had desert crawler garb on so they didn't see his face, but they did see the giant leap he took to get away. He was also injured. His sources told him and his agency that the man was hiding in the undercity, injured, hungry and in need of medical attention. They were here to find him.
Gavin was beginning to think that splitting up was a bad idea. He had not seen Sam in far too long and this place was dangerous for the MPS. Some mutants didn't like them and would love nothing more than to kill them if they were recognized.
Gavin dodged out of the way of a man who nearly fell into him when struck by another man. The fights here were one of the main forms of entertainment. It was one of the reasons the VSF turned a blind eye to them. It was profitable to get people to pay to watch mutants kill eachother. It was barbaric.
As he stepped around the fray, he spotted Sam, his best friend and fuck buddy. She was the best peice of ass he ever had and he was very attatched to her. He would kill anyone who hurt her, that was a big no no. Many whispered teasingly behind his back that he was in love with her. What they didn't know was that he was. It didn't matter that he was, he felt that if the wrong people knew that, he would put her in danger and he would rather lose her because she left him than to lose her because someone hurt her to get to him. For now, he wanted to keep her close but not so close she could be used as a pawn in some sinister game against him. It was something he could never tell her...
From where he stood, he saw a mutant stretching a hand towrads her cloak. That was not going to happen. Quick as the wind, he took out the offending mutant and tied his arm around a light post. He never said a word, only put his finger to his lips and shook his head no. He moved again so he was standing behind her. He hear the metalic scrape of her knives and smiled. "If you are going to stab me with something, I prefer it be in the ass with a strap-on." he grinned. "Those are just going to make a mess. And probably scar." The smartass tone could only be that of Gavin.

The cool sound of Gavin's voice whispering in the darkness close to her was enough to make her skin break out in goosebumps but she felt her face flush with anger that he had made her almost stab him through sneaking up on her unnecessarily, why, knowing Gavin just because he could.
She turned, her back now to the fire, blocking anyone else's view of them. A single blade appeared in her hand, sliding there as if by magic from her sleeve. She stepped close to him, almost against him, her free hand sliding around his neck, giving a good show of pretending that she was trying to provide him with some nightly entertainment.
She pressed her body against him, her hand between them so that the point of the knife just pushed against his hard abdomen. She tilted her head murmured in a husky voice "You know I charge extra for that".
Then quietly, whispered against his cheek so that no one else could hear she murmured "If you keep sneaking up on me Gavin it will be your guts spilled on the pavement." the knife slid back into her sleeve and her fingers spread across his abdomen, her nails curling in to take hold of his flesh.
"Have you come to help?" she asked softly "Or just to make me promises about what I will be doing in the early hours of the morning?"
She purred teasingly into his ear then stepped back from him speaking in a louder voice again, this time in her soft husky sex filled voice again.
"Sorry Sir, but I am not a charity, if you want entertainment for free you will need to find it elsewhere" she raised both of her hands and shoved him away from her a short distance.
With him standing so close, his woody warm scent assaulting her senses, there was little chance that she would be able to stop herself from dragging him into a quiet place for her to enjoy, to lick, to bite, to penetrate and make love to. Now that he was an arm length away it was easier to resist him.
She winked at him, knowing that even in the dark he would see it and turned back to the fire which was burning softly. She caught a movement on the otherside of the fire, someone hunched over moving slowly from shadow to shadow. They looked more like a pile of moving rags.
She watched carefully, her movments paused in concentration trying to identify the walking mound of rages as the person they were after. She glanced over her shoulder at Gavin but he was gone.
"Fuck you to hell" she whispered as she turned back to the flames"
She would have waited for the man to take up a spot around the warmth of the fire, engage him in conversation before approaching him with the offer to help. But knowing Gavin he was already off through the dark to snaffle him and take him back to be helped, whether he really wanted it or not.
Sam groaned and waited, willing to let Gavin do what he was no doubt already doing, but waiting poised on a knife edge ready to pounce if she were needed.

Gavin spotted the same thing she did. He also knew if he stayed where he was he would drag her into a dark alley and do bad things to her there. Bad things she would like and drive himself crazy with. Just thinking about it gave him deep cravings for her body. He had to get away and help the poor man who was so frightened and alone. Just like many mutants that just wanted to be accepted. When she turned her back, he took the opportunity to disappear into the crowd.
He grabbed a discarded cloak in a rubbish bin and put it on, pulling the hood over his head. He moved quickly and silently to the other side of the crowd that was huddled around the fire to keep warm on this unseasonably chilly night. He slipped in among them, being sure to be where the poor fellow would surely approach the fire. He moved over slightly to make room when he felt movement next to him. He glanced over, trying not to be noticed, as was the man.
Gavin looked across the fire at the woman he wished he could give his everything to and flashed a sign that only the guardians of the MPS knew. He wanted her to know he was there and waiting. He would let her make the first move. If anything happened, he would get the man out of there before anyone saw where he went.

Sam spotted Gavin's signal and returned it only a second before she let out a blood curdling scream, as she jumped almost into the fire, grabbing the closest man and shoving him where she had been standing.
"RAT" she screamed "A rat tried to run up my leg"
She stomped her feet sending up slight sparks from the embers that had rolled from the bin onto the ground.
Most of the circle were suddenly all jumping to action with questions of where and how big, they grabbed lumps of wood and other debris all eager for a meal tonight.
"Over there" she pretended to cry, pointing in the general direction of the darkness.
Most of the group took off after the imaginary rat, leaving herself, Gavin, the man they were trying to help and two others they were aquainted with around the fire.
"Please sir" she turned to the man, speaking softly, both hands up in a gesture of openess and safety. "We heard about what happened at the gate, we are here to help. If you come with us know we can give you medical treatment, food and shelter"
She spoke quickly and quietly, not wanting to alert anyone who didn't know who they were. She glanced up, flashing a briliant smile at Gavin then glancing at the group of men all beating at the trash over never a pile of garbage.
A few men looked to be getting bored and so she took several steps towards them a screamed again "I see it, I see it, its over there"
The men all took off further into the distance and she turned back to the injured man and Gavin who was beside him.
"We are here to help, you will be safe with us, I can promise you. But we have to get out of here now" she pleaded.
Her eyes glanced up to meet Gavin's, they caught his gaze and lingered there. There was no rush to return, they had all the hours until daybreak to hide their deeds. It was the promise in her glance that had her eager to return, to be alone with Gavin.
The look in her eyes told everything, she wanted him and she wanted him now. Her tongue flicked out and licked her bottom lip just a little and she had to take a deep breath with a harsh intake of breath to hide her true thoughts.
The man shrouded in rags lifted his head and looked at her, he then followed her gaze and looked at Gavin. His pale eyes were piercing from beneath the rags and filled with the desperate determination to survive. He gave the barest of nods that he agreed making the corners of Sam's mouth turn up in a smile.
Without a word of explanation on where they were going, the point seemed rather irrelevant, she grabbed his arm gently and started pulling him away from the warmth and safety of the fire and the crowd that would return as soon as they had captured that rat.
They slipped into the darkness and around a large pile of garbage, the going was slow as the man was injured. Once away from the glow of the fire it was extremely dark and she stumbled a few times as her vision adjusted. She looked around for Gavin but couldn't find him. She grit her teeth and tried not to let the tension she felt flow through into the injured man.
They had made several hundred meters through the dark when the man stumbled and fell. Instantly Sam leaned over him "Please, only a little further" she pleaded but the man shook his head, too weak to rise, too injured to care if he died there.

((Nathan Elliot used with permission))
Ever the impatient, Sammie made her move. Gavin waited patiently for her to work her feminine whiles on the man and stood supportively next to the man so he felt safety in numbers. He nodded to the other two as they stood close but far enough away not to make the man feel trapped. When the man looked at him he nodded and gave him a wink to let him know he was on his side and most definitely working with the girl.
The crowd of men all gone after the imaginary viscous rat, which were about the size of a small dog after the mutations of the apocalypse, disease ridden and notorious for chewing on peoples feet while they slept or stealing infants from their cots, Gavin knew it was time to move. He could smell the stench of infected wounds and knew the poor pale man was in no shape to travel by foot. He needed help. As soon as Sam had him away from the fire, he stepped into the shadows and disappeared. He knew who could help him and the man owed him a favor.
5 minutes later, he was back in the Undercity and following her trail. He found her with the man laying on the ground in a heap, unable to go on. In his hand he held a harness. "Here, Sammie, help me get this harness on him." He said as he carefully helped the man into a sitting position. He snapped the clips into place and fastened the buckles snugly. "I know it hurts man but we gotta get you attention fast. Just close your eyes, it won't last long."
Before Sam could ask questions a very handsome man in an armani suit swooped out of the sky. It was a face everyone in New Vegas knew. Not many people knew that Nathan Elliot was a mutant. He grinned at Sam as he stepped closer.
"Let's stand him up." Gavin grunted as he pulled the man to his feet and turned him so his back was to Nathan. It only took a moment to fasten the harness to Nathan so that the man was secure. "Take him to the cathedral, Amitiel is waiting for him. I'll check on him in the morning, see if we can get him new papers and a pad to call home." He said and nodded at the soon to be mayor of New Vegas, "That's one less you owe me." he grinned at the man. Without a word Nathan took off into the air with the injured mutant.
Gavin turned and looked at Samantha, "Well, Sammie, another flawless rescue by the best and the brightest." he smiled his crooked grin of mischief. "Wanna go do the paperwork in my office?" He knew there was not paperwork and she should know it too. He just wanted to get her alone. "All this work is making me horny." he turned his back to her, "Wanna ride?"
